Some breeders show their dogs and have employees to care for the mom/dads/pups. Since it is expensive and time consuming to show dogs and get the titles, I prefer to get those quality pups myself, then raise my own dogs and pups, but not show them. So most expensive breeders can claim quality pedigree, but know nothing about individual personalities of pups who are in a kennel with human contact limited to feeding and keeping clean. I buy pups with quality breeding for desired traits and health, then devote my time to raising puppies suitable for families with young children. I know (partly from experience with my own grandchildren) that a toddler and/or a baby still in diapers make it almost impossible for a couple to properly train a puppy from scratch.
You have probably also seen pups for only a few hundred dollars... they are generally in a pen in the basement, garage, barn or just outside somewhere.... essentially they know no difference between clean and dirty, which makes them difficult to housebreak. My pups learn clean versus dirty from about 3 weeks
Through experience and training (vet hosp, 3 humane societies, vet school) I have learned that a long heritage/pedigree of no problems with hips/allergies/eyes/heart/thyroid/other health problems is more dependable than an xray of one parent... so I don't waste my money, instead I research my bloodlines. I have 8 generations of good health to show on my dogs.
I got my first golden, Katie, in 99. In 2002 (I was working as a Med. Tech. and resuming classes for vet school) I discovered to be a veterinarian is to be forever broke, so I decided to be broke at home with a fence, doggie doors, puppies, a garden and sewing machine... now I also do beads and essential oils and home cooking for my dogs... It's a rewarding life, preparing puppies for good homes, especially with young children where housebreaking and basic training can be a real challenge with diaper changing and other toddler things! I hope this helps you decide.
